A dirt block using the default texture pack.

Dirt is one of the most common blocks in Minecraft, along with stone. Dirt can be mined without any tools, at a rate of one block per second. However, using any type of shovel will speed up the process even further. Using a diamond shovel allows the player to mine dirt almost instantaneously.

Apart from making up a large percentage of the crust of any minecraft world, dirt has no other uses other than for creating structures. You cannot craft with it, or use it in any way inside a furnace.

Pro Tip: Dirt can be a useful block to use when you are trying to survive your first night in minecraft. Due to the large appearances of the dirt block, it is an almost inexhaustable resource, which means that you won't have to worry about using too much of it on a temporary shelter!
